John G. Borbonus

The John Borbonus Memorial Golf Tournament is more than just a sporting event—it’s a heartfelt tribute to Army Specialist John G. Borbonus, a Boise native and American hero who made the ultimate sacrifice during Operation Iraqi Freedom on April 12, 2007.

Held annually at Falcon Crest Golf Club in Kuna, Idaho, this tournament brings together golfers, veterans, and community members to celebrate John’s legacy of courage, compassion, and selfless service.

Since its inception, the tournament has become a cornerstone of the Treasure Valley community, raising funds to support veterans, their families, and young adults through educational scholarships. Each swing of the club honors John’s bravery while fostering a spirit of unity and remembrance. Over the years, the event has raised more than $130,000 for causes that reflect John’s values of service and generosity.

Whether you’re a golf enthusiast or simply someone who wants to honor those who serve, this event offers an opportunity to make a difference while celebrating the life of an extraordinary individual.

John G. Borbonus

John George Borbonus, a Boise, Idaho native, was a U.S. Army Specialist who demonstrated extraordinary heroism during his service in Iraq. Born on May 12, 1987, he graduated from Boise High School in 2005, where he was known as a talented athlete and an active member of the USA Ski and Snowboard team.

Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the Army on July 16, 2005, and began training for the Special Forces as an Army RangerAssigned to the 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Fort Richardson, Alaska, Borbonus deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On April 12, 2007, at the age of 19, he was manning an M240 machine gun at a patrol base in Baghdad when a suicide bomber drove a truck loaded with explosives toward the base. Borbonus held his position and fired at the vehicle, killing the driver before the bomb detonated. His actions saved many lives but cost him his own when the explosion destroyed multiple buildings.

For his bravery and selflessness, Borbonus was posthumously awarded the Silver Star Medal—the third-highest military decoration for valor in combat. He was also promoted posthumously to the rank of Specialist

Borbonus is remembered not only for his military service but also for his vibrant personality and commitment to his community. He volunteered over 100 hours at St. John’s Catholic Church and was known for his humor and ability to uplift those around him. His sacrifice has been commemorated through various initiatives:

Statue Memorial: A bronze statue of Borbonus was created by sculptor Lena Toritch and installed at Kelly’s Whitewater River Park in Cascade, Idaho. The statue serves as a lasting tribute to his patriotism and sacrifice.

Annual Golf Tournament: The Borbonus family organizes a golf tournament in his honor to raise funds for veterans and young adults. Proceeds benefit organizations like the Idaho Veterans Assistance Program and Boise State University’s golf programs.

MEPS Room Dedication: A room at the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) in Boise has been named after him
